My First Interview

Recently I was interviewed by Alteria Motives Magazine http://alteriamotives.atspace.co.uk/ very happy to take part here is the interview

WGW Coverage - Interview: DJ Wolfman
Attention: open in a new window.PDFPrintE-mail
DJ Wolfman aka Rick Eaglestone has been a regular WGW DJ for the last few years. Rick is an integral DJ at the Sophie Lancaster fundraiser bash as well as helping out DJing around the rest of Whitby when needed. As well as WGW Rick regularly hosts shows on Nightbreed Radio and also Death Rock Radio. I got chance to catch with Rick and ask about WGW and all things DJing.
Phlis – Hi Rick, may I thank you for giving Alteria Motives Ezine this interview. Can we start by you giving our readers a little bit of info about yourself?

Rick – I grew up in a musical house my mum was a huge Bowie, Siouxsie and the banshees fan. She also had a lot of punk friends who listened to Dead Kennedys & early Misfits – also through them discovered a band called the Rattles and I if hadn’t had a chance run in with some kids whilst at school who had a different version of one of the rattles songs we might not be doing this interview. Also as a kid I used to watch a lot of Black & White horror & Munsters – my first boyhood crush was on Yvonne de Carlo. Nothing much has changed apart the added addiction to Marmite & Rum

Phlis – What was it that got you in DJing and what sort of music did you start playing?

Rick – I started going to Goth event’s in the late 90’s and early 00’s and would see people like Martin Oldgoth who played music that I liked and heard of & introduced me to other bands I had never heard of, and I thought that would be something I would like to do. I have only be DJing for about 4 years now so it’s been all Goth, Deathrock & Post-Punk

Phlis – How did you get involved in WGW?

Rick – I have been going to Whitby for quite a few years, but when I started doing the radio shows about 5 years ago one of the DJ’s on the same station was Martin Oldgoth so when I saw him next I mentioned that I would like to do it live instead of podcasts etc and he very kindly let me do a slot at one of the Sophie night when it based in the spa foyer. The rest as people say is history.

Phlis – What does it mean to you to be involved in such an iconic festival?

Rick – It’s great I mean I still have to pinch myself, when I started coming to Whitby I never thought I would be doing what I am now.

Phlis – You play a part in the Sophie Lancaster Fundraiser, how did the death of Sophie affect you?

Rick – I think like everyone else just total shock at an action that was totally sickening and unjustifiable but the work that Sylvia Lancaster & S.O.P.H.I.E foundation do is fantastic and to be even involved in a small way is an honour.

Phlis – How do you plan your setlist?

Rick – The same way I do the radio shows – a mix of old, new & forgotten songs.

Phlis – As a DJ you may get the odd request that you get sick of being asked to play, do you have one of these songs?

Rick – No I have been pretty lucky up to this point 

Phlis – You are the creator of Monster Mash on Death Rock Radio and also Groovie Ghoulie on Nightbreed Radio, how did you come to create these radio shows?

Rick – I have known Trevor “Darklord” Bamford for a while but had lost touch with him, we connected again through social media and he wanted to get a Radio station going – I sent him a demo of what I wanted to do, he liked what he heard so Monster Mash was born and I am very happy that it airs on Deathrock Radio too. Groovie Ghoulie was created because I was torn between Monster Mash & Groovie Ghoulie as show names I loved them both because one is great song & one is a great cartoon, people seemed to like Monster Mash but as it’s a monthly show I made Groovie Ghoulie show as a weekly show.

Phlis – Do you have your own radio jingle, if so what is it?

Rick – I don’t but others have made some great jingles on my behalf.

Phlis – Why did you choose the name of Wolfman as your DJ tag?

Rick – My love of classic horror, Wolfman was always my favourite plus as I’ve got older I’ve got hairier so it seems to fit well.

Phlis – What has been the highlight of your DJ career so far?

Rick – Has to be the 1st time I DJ’d alongside Martin Oldgoth – as I said before he was the reason I wanted to DJ in the first place and to be lucky enough to do that was fantastic.

Phlis – Is there any club or festival you would like to play and why?

Rick – I would love to DJ at WGT in Germany, I have been before and it’s just a fantastic atmosphere and very varied.

Phlis – What music are you currently listening to?

Rick – I am currently listening to Lupine’s new album The Deadly Hollows & Grooving in Greens upcoming album Stranglehold.

Phlis – Apart from DJing is there anything else you do musically?

Rick – I used to play guitar but had to give it up due to injury.

Phlis – What is the best live act you have seen recently and what made the gig so good?

Rick – When I DJ’d at Dark Waters in Nottingham I finally got to see Pretentious, Moi? I really love their debut album and was really looking to hearing it live & they did not disappoint.

Phlis – Thank you so much for giving Alteria Motives this interview, is there anything you would like to add?

Rick – Thanks very much for your time & I look forward to seeing everyone at Whitby

Thanks again, see you at Whitby.
